Get The Most From Your Slow Cooker

Slow cookers are fantastic because in about 15 minutes, you can have a meal prepared and go on with the rest of your day. When I rise in the morning, it seems that this is the time of day when I feel the most energized. This makes it an ideal time to add all of the ingredients into my slow cooker and head off to work.

Who wants to work all day and then come home and spend an hour or two preparing dinner? Not me! Though slow cookers will save you a lot of time, there are a few tips I can give you that can help you use your slow cooker more effectively.

One thing you can do to make things easier is prepare as much as you can before bed and put this in the refrigerator. Then when you get up in the morning, you can throw everything in your slow cooker and your off! Some foods such as rice and pasta you will not be able to prepare ahead of time but most foods can be. Just do as much as you can. Most of us have enough to accomplish in the morning with getting our children ready for school, preparing breakfast, etc.

Being that the majority of popular crock pots only have two settings of low and high, I have found that cooking on the lowest setting gives me the best results. Cooking on the high setting is risky because you have a very good chance of overcooking and sometimes even burning your food. By cooking on low, it is very unlikely that you will overcook anything. An even better idea is to buy a programmable crock pot as these will cook foods perfectly and can be left unattended for longer periods without having to worry about overcooking.

Many slow cooker recipes call for vegetables and if you are going to use fresh ones, you will want to plave these under the meat as they will take longer too cook. Canned vegetables cook fast and should be placed over the meat. If you have frozen meat, it is better too thaw it before putting it in the slow cooker. I have found that my roasts cook better when thawed first but you can add the roast frozen if you want, just make sure that you cook it longer.

These small tips can help you save time and get better results from your slow cooking efforts. You will find that as you use your slow cooker more and gain experience, you will develop your own habits and find other ways to save time.
